Notes |
Baron Halton.
Roger was castellan of Chateau Galliard, located between Paris and Rouen on the Seine at Les Andelys, in Normandy, when Phillip Ii of France laid siege to it in 1203-1204. Richard I of England built Chateau Galliard specifically to defend western Normandy from the French, and the signifigance of the siege is that it determined whether England or France would control Normandy. The French were successful, but Roger de Lacy gave such an heroic account of himself that his story just begs to be told.
