    • Jacob Thurmann Ihlen (1833 - 1903) was a Norwegian politician for the Conservative Party.
      He was born in Holmestrand as the son of Nils Ihlen and Barbara Wincentz Thurmann. He married Belgian citizen Ambrosine Pauline Rouquet in 1868, and the couple had five children.[1] Also, he was the uncle of Nils Claus Ihlen.

    • Personal life
      He was born in Holmestrand as the son of ship-owner Nils Ihlen (1793–1865) and Barbara Wincentz Thurmann (1800–1879).[1] He was a brother of Niels Ihlen and Wincentz Thurmann Ihlen, an uncle of Christian and Nils Claus Ihlen, and a granduncle of Nils, Joakim and Alf Ihlen.[2]

      He married Belgian citizen Ambroisine Pauline Rouquet in February 1868 in Our Saviour's Church,[3] and the couple had five children. One daughter, Celina, married landowner and politician Christian Pierre Mathiesen, and was the mother of Haaken C. Mathiesen, Jr. Another daughter, Barbara, married barrister Arthur Knagenhjelm.[1][4][5] Another daughter, Marie, married bishop Jens Gran Gleditsch.[6] Their son Jacob Ihlen was an attorney and captain, and owned the property Parkveien 37 for some time.[7]

      Career
      He finished his secondary education in 1851 and took the cand.jur. degree in 1855. After working three years as a trainee in a trading company, he was an attorney in Christiania from 1859, and a barrister with access to working with Supreme Court cases from 1863.[8][9] He was elected to the Parliament of Norway in 1883, and re-elected in 1886, representing the urban constituency of Kristiania, Hønefoss og Kongsvinger.[10] He was a member of Kristiania city council from 1872.[8]

      He was a co-founder of Forsikringsselskapet Norden together with Carl Ferdinand Gjerdrum, and chairman of the board from 1867 to 1903.[11] From 1871 to 1903 he chaired Forsikringsselskapet Poseidon.[12] He was also a deputy board member of Hypothekbanken from 1888.[8]

      He was decorated as a Commander of the Order of St. Olav in 1894. He was also a Commander of the Order of the Dannebrog and the Order of the Polar Star.[8] He died in 1903 in Kristiania.[1] His son-in-law Christian Pierre later became chairman of Forsikringsselskapet Norden.[9]

      Karriere
      Jacob tok examen artium i 1851 og den juridiske embedseksamen i 1855. Han ble advokat i Christiania fra 1859, og fikk møterett for Høyesterett fra 1863.[3][4] Han ble valgt til Stortinget i 1883 og i 1886, for partiet Høyre. Han representerte valgkretsen Kristiania, Hønefoss og Kongsvinger.[5] Han ble medlem av Kristiania bystyre fra 1872.[3]

      Ihlen etablerte Forsikringsselskapet Norden sammen med Carl Ferdinand Gjerdrum, og var styreformann fra 1867 til 1903.[6] Fra 1871 til 1903 var han også styreformann i Forsikringsselskapet Poseidon,[7] og styremedlem i Hypotekbanken fra 1888.[3]

      Familie
      Ihlen var sønn av skipsreder Nils Ihlen (1793–1865) og Barbara Wincentz Thurmann (1800–1879).[8] Han var bror til Niels Ihlen og Wincentz Thurmann Ihlen, onkel til Christian og Nils Claus Ihlen, og grandonkel til Nils, Joakim og Alf Ihlen.[9]

      Jacob Thurmann Ihlen giftet seg med belgiske Ambroisine Pauline Rouquet i februar 1868 i Oslo domkirke,[10] og paret fikk fem barn. Ihlen oppførte Huitfeldts gate 3, der familien bodde til hans død. Datteren Celina giftet seg med godseier og politiker Christian Pierre Mathiesen, og ble mor til seks barn. En annen datter, Barbara, giftet seg med advokat Arthur Knagenhjelm.[8][11][12] Datteren Marie giftet seg med biskop Jens Gran Gleditsch.[13] Deres sønn Jacob Ihlen ble advokat og offiser, og eide Parkveien 37 en tid.[14]

      Han ble kommandør av Sankt Olavs Orden i 1894. Han ble også kommandør av Dannebrogordenen samt Polarstjerneordenen.[3] Han døde i 1903 i Kristiania.[8] Hans svigersønn Christian Pierre ble senere styreformann i Forsikringsselskapet Norden.[4]

      Ihlen er begravet på Vår Frelsers gravlund.[15]
