John served as Sgt. in Capt. James Cudworth's expedition against the Dutch in 1673. The name John Witherell appears on the "list of names of freeman of the Jurisdiction of new Plymouth Anno Dom 1675" from Scituate. he was appointed Surveyor of Highways for Scituate for Scituate in June, 1677, and was named executor in the will of his father-in-law dated Apr 4, 1689. During the French and Indian wars he served as Lieut. in Capt John Sylvester's Co., from Plymouth County and d. while participating in the unsuccessful expedition of Sir William Phips against Quebec.
