Worked for Brown Carriage Co. in Elmwood, Ill in 1901 Moved to US and Elmwood, Ill in 1861. Worked for Aetna Life Ins. for 30 years after they moved from Elmwood to Peoria, Ill.
It is said that William was one of those who laughed when the horseless carriage was introduced, but eventually it drove him out of business.
| A Pink Wedding | Married: at the home of the bride's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Morey, Wednesday evening, June 8th 1892 - William H. Douglas and Blanche A. Hoffman - both well and favorably known in Elmwood. Miss Violet Phelps (accompanied by Miss Zelle Bucher) played a violin solo from Friedshuty, The presents were many and handsome. William made a journal of his Resources: "Trip to the Dominion of Canada and Return" in 1874 in which he includes visits to several Uncle's and Cousin's in Ontario.
In 1882, he took up the hardware business with Mr. Barber Brumley of Elmwood, Ill. Was on the Board of Directors of the Elmwood State Bank in 1891. Moved to Peoria, Ilinois in 1901.

| William Douglas dies Here after a Long Illness | William H, Douglas, 70 years old, a local resident for 22 years, died at hs home, 603 Cornwall street at 6:30 o'clock last night. He had been ill for the past four months. Mr. Douglas was born in Sidney Ont., August 26, 1853, the son of William and Sarah Jones Douglas. He moved to the United States with his parents and settled in Elmwood, Ill., when he was eight years old Mr. Douglas associated with his father in the carriage and wagon making business for many years. He moved to this city twenty-two years ago. he had ben employed as a special representative for the Aetna Life Insurance compay for 16 years and had traveled for various firms for 30 years. He married Miss Blanche Hoffman June 8, 1892. Three children were born to them all of whom survive. Besides his wife, he is survived by the following children: Mrs. Arthur W. Reich, Springfield, Ill., Mrs. Albert T. Hart and Miss Marcia Imogene Douglas both of this city. Three grandchildren also survive him. Funeral services will be held at Kilpatric chapel, Elmwood, at 2:30 o.clock tomorrow afternoon. Burial will be in Elmwood. |
