was living with her grandmother, Nancy Finley Bell Hough in 1850 Census, but Nancy was probably too old to have been her mother. Charlotte was not married in 1847 or 1850, so it is possible, but not proven, that Josephine was her daughter prior to her marriage.
Here is another theory from an email from Denise (Hough) Gresh in Jan 2007: "I would like to point out one thing. Josephine Hough was the daughter of Joseph Hough and Nancy Bell, and not a granddaughter of Nancy Bell Hough. After Joseph's death, several of his children filed a 'Petition to Partition' in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Josephine was listed as an infant daughter of Joseph Hough by his widow Nancy. "
