- EARLDOM OF STRATHEARN (IX, 1)
MAURICE MORAY of Drumsargard, co. Lanark, said to be son of Sir John MORAY of the
same, possibly by Mary, daughter of Malise, 7th EARL OF STRATHEARN [SCT], but more probably by an earlier wife,(i) was one of the Scottish leaders who in August 1335 rejected the terms of peace then offered and continued in resistance to Edward III. His lands in Ballencrieff were in the King's hands through his forfeiture, 1335-37; and his forfeited barony of Drumsargard, &c., was granted by Balliol to Sir Anthony de Lucy, 2 December 1336, Maurice being then an enemy and a rebel. He was Sheriff of Clydesdale and took part in the siege and capture of Perth in 1339; was present in Parliament [SCT], 17 and 22 September 1341; Keeper of Stirling Castle, on its surrender by the English, April 1342. He was created, 9 February 1343/4, EARL OF STRATHEARN [SCT], and appears as Earl on the Roll of that Parliament [SCT], June 1344, in which the resignation of Earl Malise (in 1332) was confirmed. He married (dispensation 11 July 1339) Joan, widow of John (CAMPBELL), EARL OF ATHOLL [SCT] (killed at Halidon Hill, 19 July 1333), and before that of Malise, 7th EARL OF STRATHEARN [SCT] (died before 1329), daughter of Sir John MENTEITH of Rusky. He died s.p.m., being slain at the battle of Neville's Cross, 17 October 1346, when the Earldom became extinct. His widow married, as his 2nd wife (post nuptial dispensation 9 November 1347), William (SUTHERLAND), 5th EARL OF SUTHERLAND [SCT], who died about 1370. She was living, 20 March 1366/7, but the date of her death is not known. [Complete Peeragte XII/1:387-9, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
[i] His parentage is not known with certainty. If Mary of Strathearn married his presumed father, Sir John Moray, about 1319-22, as is thought, when she and her husband had charter of the lands of Abercairney from her father, the 7th Earl, confirmed by her brother, the 8th Earl, about 1330, she can hardly have been the mother of grown men in 1335. When Maurice Moray had dispensation for his marriage with Joan, Countess of Strathearn and widow of the 7th Earl, 11 July 1339, no mention is made of this Earl, who, if Mary was Maurice's mother, would have been his grandfather.
