- EARLDOM OF ROSS [SCT] (VI, 4)
HUGH (DE ROSS), 6th EARL OF ROSS [SCT], son and heir, was godson to Alexander III [SCT]. After having brought relief to the English garrison of Urquhart Castle, he received a safe-conduct to visit his father in prison, August 1297. Under the indenture of 1303, he entered the service or Edward I. In December 1307 he was among the Scottish magnates whom Edward II [ENG] directed to keep the peace, and in 1308 he received that King's thanks for his good service. Failing help from England, for which his father and he had appealed, he made his peace with Brus. He was knighted before 5 December 1315. As Hugh de Ros he was one of the guarantors, required by England, of the truce made 1 June 1323, having been "made Erll" on 17 March preceding; and, by special command of King Robert, he swore to maintain the marriage contract between Prince David [SCT] and the Princess Joan of England, 1328.
He married, [? 1stly], Maud, daughter of Robert DE BRUS, jure uxoris EARL OF CARRICK (by his 1st wife Margaret, suo jure COUNTESS OF CARRICK) and sister of ROBERT I [SCT] (e). She, who was living in September 1323, was buried at Fearn. He married, [? 2ndly], some time before 1329 (g), Margaret GRAHAM, said to be daughter of Sir David GRAHAM (h). He was killed, in command of the reserve at the battle of Halidon Hill, 19 July 1333; and was buried at Fearn. His widow married, 2ndly (dispensation, 13 April 1340], John DE BARCLAY. [Complete Peerage XI:144-5, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
(e) At the unknown date of this charter, he was already a knight. 'Breve Cron'., p. 319, says that their son William was b. before their marriage.
(g) When dispensation and legitimation of past and future offspring were granted, 29 Nov.
(h) Sir David was of Old Montrose, which he acquired by exchange with Robert de Brus.]
