  • Notes
    • First mention of the NAGEL name, in America, that is researched in thisdocument is found in "Ship Passenger Lists, Pennsylvania and Delaware(1641 - 1825)", Edited and Indexed by Carl Boyer, Pub: Boyer, Newhall, CA1980.
The quote from Friedrich Krebs follows (with an attempt at sometranslations):
      "Einige Amerika-Auswanderer des 18. Jahrhunderts"
Some American emigrants of the 18 Century.
"Senftenegger Monatsblatt fur Genealogie und Heraldik, vol. 5:2-3(Oct.-Nov. 1960), cols. 79-82."
A monthly magazine (or publication) for Genealogy and Heraldry, vo. 5:2-3(Oct-Nov.
      1960), cols 79-82.
HS = "Pennsylvania German Pioneers" by Ralph Beaver Strassburger, editedby William John Hinke, Norristown, PA, 1934.
"Die nach HS folgende Zahl zeigt die Liste an, in welcher der betreffendeEinwanderer verzeichnet ist, das folgende Datum den Zeitpunkt der Landungin Philadelphia."
By HS following figure shows (indicates) the list, which is concerningemmigrants that are scheduled, on the following date to Land inPhiladelphia.
"Aus der Stadt Wachenheim an der Weinstrasse, Pfalz."
From the City of Wachenheim on Wine street, Palatine.
      "Quelle: Familienakten des Stadtarchives Wachenheim"

Krebs quotes "Nagel, Witwe des Johann Jacob N., durfte mit ihren jungerenKindern: Anna Maria, Philipp Daniel u. Maria Barbara, nach Pennsylvanienabziehen, gegen Errichtung des 10. Pfennigs, lt. kurpfalz. Verordnungdd. Mannheim 3. XI. 1750. Inventar zwischen ihr und den daheim bleibndenKindern, vom 5. XII. u. 10 XII. 1750 (Anm. d. Red.: Vielleicht HS 176,16. X. 1751)."
A translation by Rodger Bundy, Carroll Co. Historical Society linguist,is "Nagel, widow of Johann Jacob N., is allowed to move to Pennsylvaniawith her younger children: Anna Maria, Phillip Daniel and Maria Barbara, against the sum of 10 pfennigs, according to court order dated Mannheim,3rd day, 11th month, 1750. Inventory between her and the childrenstaying at home, 5th and 10th day, 12th month, 1750. (government report:perhaps HS 176, 16th day, 10th month, 1751)."
Another translation by Ilenor Stammer Nale is "Nagel, widow of JohannJacob Nagel, is allowed with her youngest children: Anna Maria, PhilippDaniel and Maria Barbara to go to Pennsylvania, paying 10 penniesentrance from Mannheim, 11th month, 3rd day, 1750. Possessions (orbelongings) between her and other children left behind - 12th month, 5thand 10th day, 1750."
The above dates were based on the "Old Style" calendar which, before1753, began on the 25th of March. Thus, in the old style calendar, thecourt order was dated 27 January, 1750, the inventory of goods was takenbetween the 1st and the 6th of March, 1750, and the government reportdate was 10 January, 1751.
      ----------------------------
Anna Maria Nagel probably brought her three youngest children to Americabecause her parents and some siblings had come here earlier. Nothing isknown of Anna and her children from their arrival in 1751 untill sheobtained a land grant in Maryland in 1756. However, she probably stayedwith her family in the Hanover, PA area until she got the land grant. Sheprobably settled in Maryland because her brother Johan Jacob Bankert hadcome to America in 1739 with his family and settled in Maryland in 1751.Jacob was 18 years younger than Anna Maria. Jacob's oldest daughter,Maria Margaret married Anna Maria's son Philip Daniel around 1761. Theywere first cousins.
